Celebrating the life of
Del Barker
December 26, 1924 - June 17, 2007
DELBERT E. BARKER
Savannah- Del Barker, 82 died Sunday, June 17, 2007 in the Neurological ICU at Memorial Health University Medical Center.
He was born in Indiana and spent his early years in Hoopeston, Illinois. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1941 at age 17, and spent the early years of WWII serving in the Armed Guard, protecting our convoys as they crossed the treacherous North Atlantic, on the way to Murmansk, Russia. His ship was sunk by a German torpedo, but he managed to survive.
After his discharge, he attended college at the University of Miami, where he received both a B.S. and law degree. At the same time, he reenlisted in the United States Navy Air Corp, and won his wings as a flier.
His life was so varied, with many hobbies and interests. He became a builder of offices, homes and golf courses. At one time he had 200 greyhound dogs which he raised for racing purposes.
He headed the FAA in Savannah for a number of years because of his flying abilities. Two of his greatest loves were sailing and golf. He was a near scratch golfer, and when he was in his seventies, he shot his age in 3 consecutives years.
He was a member of the Landings Club on Skidaway Island and The Chatham Club.
He was preceded in death by his brother “Pete” Barker and his daughter Gina Barker.
He leaves behind his devoted wife, Barbara B. Barker of The Marshes on Skidaway Island, his son, Tony A. Barker and wife Sandra of Tucson, Arizona, his brothers, Harold Barker and Robert E. Barker and wife Hazel of Savannah; his granddaughters, Tammy Williams and husband Freddie of Savannah, Holly Fahnestock and husband Geoffrey of Roswell, Georgia, his grandsons, Tony L.L. Barker and wife Cindy of Tucson, Arizona, and Jeffrey Barker; his step-sons, Randall A. Pickard of Glenview, Illinois, Scott D.
